From Zaria to Lomé: My Unforgettable Road Trip Through West Africa

It was 2001, and as a Diploma in French Language student at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, I embarked on a thrilling journey to the French Village in Badagry, Lagos. The real adventure began when we set off on a sightseeing road trip to Togo!

As we cruised through the lush greenery, our taste buds danced with abulo, a sweet corn delicacy wrapped in leaves. Approaching Togo, colonial-era buildings whispered tales of the past. But nothing prepared us for the breathtaking beaches rich sea green waters and pristine sands, where fishermen dried seafood on palm fronds.

Our next stop was the Université de Benin, where we encountered gigantic mosquitoes (which no be Naija mosquitoes mate at all at all) and co-ed hostels. We Naija students showed our strong heads, chasing the Togolese guys out of the bathroom. Breakfast at a quirky kiosk was a delight, with La Baguette, Omelette, and Pasta (served with a complimentary La Baguette). Trust your Naija people to go for quantity. 😉

We explored the ECOWAS Secretariat, Lomé, and the vibrant Togo Central Market. After a few culinary misadventures, we savored the thieboudienne and crispy chicken at a Malian restaurant. Evenings were for dancing Makossa and Zouk steps under the stars.

Will I return to Togo? Absolutely! This time, I’ll take 7 days for a grand tour. The adventure bug has bitten me, and I’m ready for the next thrill.
