Introduction
Flying is one of the quickest ways to travel between Nigerian cities. Whether you are travelling for business, a family event or a holiday, you want to arrive at your destination on time.
Unfortunately, flight delays and cancellations can disrupt travel plans. They can lead to missed meetings, extra accommodation costs and unnecessary stress.
In September 2026, reports on data released by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority showed that approximately 60% of domestic flights in Nigeria were delayed during August.
This highlights why travellers should prepare for possible disruptions when planning a journey.
Why do flights get delayed?
Flight delays can happen for several reasons, including:
- Weather conditions: Heavy rain, storms or poor visibility may affect flight operations.
- Technical issues: Aircraft may require maintenance or safety checks before departure.
- Operational challenges: Airline scheduling and other operational problems may affect departure times.
- Airport or industry disruptions: Events affecting airport access or aviation operations can interrupt scheduled services.
- Air traffic restrictions: Aircraft may need to wait for clearance or an available departure slot.
A delay does not automatically mean that an airline is unsafe. Safety checks and operational decisions can be necessary to protect passengers.
How can you prepare for a domestic flight in Nigeria?
1. Book your flight carefully
Compare available departure times and choose a schedule that gives you enough flexibility. If you have an important meeting or event, consider travelling well in advance.
2. Arrive at the airport early
Follow your airline’s instructions on check-in and boarding times. Arriving early gives you more time to complete airport procedures.
3. Check your flight status
Confirm your flight details before leaving for the airport. Keep an eye on messages from your airline and any official updates about your journey.
4. Avoid tight connections
If your itinerary includes more than one flight, allow sufficient time between connections. A delay on the first flight could affect the rest of your journey.
5. Keep important items with you
Keep your identification, medications, valuables and essential travel documents in your hand luggage, where appropriate.
What should you do if your flight is delayed?
If your flight is delayed, remain calm and contact the airline for information.
Ask for the revised departure time, the reason for the delay where available, and whether any rebooking arrangements are necessary.
If the delay causes additional problems, keep your booking confirmation, boarding pass and receipts for relevant expenses.
Your rights will depend on the circumstances and applicable aviation regulations. The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority provides information about passenger protection and complaint procedures.
What if your flight is cancelled?
Contact the airline promptly to understand your available options. Depending on the circumstances and applicable rules, you may be entitled to a refund, an alternative flight or other assistance.
Do not assume that every cancellation has the same remedy. Request clear information about your specific booking.
How can a travel agency support you?
A good travel agency does more than sell tickets. It helps clients understand their travel arrangements and provides guidance when unexpected changes occur.
